Leave the Washer Door Open: A Small Habit That Makes a Big Difference

Tiffany VanBuren • August 27, 2025

A simple step to prevent mold, mildew, and musty smells.

If you’ve ever opened a washing machine and noticed a musty odor, you already know why this small step matters. Our laundry rooms use front-loading machines, which are efficient and gentle on clothes, but they need a little extra care after each cycle.

Why it matters
When a washer door is closed immediately after use, moisture stays trapped inside the drum. That damp, sealed space creates the perfect conditions for mold and mildew, which not only smell unpleasant but can also shorten the machine's lifespan.

What to do
After you finish your laundry, simply leave the washer door slightly open. This allows air to circulate inside the drum and enables any remaining water to dry naturally.

The benefits

  • Keeps machines fresh and odor-free for the next resident
  • Prevents mildew build-up and costly maintenance problems
  • Helps everyone enjoy a cleaner, more comfortable laundry space

A community effort
By leaving the washer door open after use, you’re doing a small thing that makes a big difference. Thank you for helping us keep our laundry rooms fresh, clean, and welcoming for everyone in the building.
